“By no means is it over” – Watts adamant Rovers can catch Dundalk
By Stephen Leonard
SHAMROCK Rovers midfielder Dylan Watts is adamant that the Hoops are still very much in the title race despite slipping eight points off the pace following last Friday night’s 0-1 defeat at the hands of leaders Dundalk in Tallaght Stadium.
Many would agree that the performance of Stephen Bradley’s side deserved a lot more on the night, but they managed to put that setback behind them and dig out a 0-2 victory over Dublin rivals St Patrick’s Athletic in Richmond Park three days later.
Shamrock Rovers midfielder Dylan Watts insists the Hoops have every chance of closing the gap on leaders and current champions Dundalk.
Goals by Greg Bolger and Sean Kavanagh were enough to see Rovers return home with the spoils on that occasion and Watts praised the resolve of his team mates.
“That win over Pat’s was a massive three points for us” he told The Echo.
“Friday night [against Dundalk] had taken a lot out of us. It was a warm night, on a big pitch and it was a very high intensity game so to go to Pat’s and get the win after that was huge.
“We had played really well against Dundalk on Friday night and to not win the game was very disappointing.
“But we had a long chat after the match and we said we’ve just got to pick ourselves up after that and go on a run.
“We went on a good run this time last year so hopefully we can do something similar again because there’s still plenty of points to play for. By no means is it over.
“We still have to go and play them [Dundalk] there, so there are opportunities to take points off them” he said.
Next up for Rovers will be the visit of Sligo to Tallaght Stadium on Friday and Watts insists they will not be taking their foot off the pedal, especially against a Bit O’Red outfit that undid them 2-1 at the Showgrounds back in May.
“We can’t have any room for complacency” stressed Watts. “We know we’re going to have to give it 100 percent to keep us right up there.”
