Castletymon library plans submitted for the council’s approval

PLANS for the development of a new library in Castletymon were presented at the recent Tallaght Area Committee meeting.

The plans, approved by the committee, and now to be presented to the full council, will see the development of a new library building on a site located beside St Aengus church on the Castletymon Road.

It will see the library removed from its current location within the Castletymon shopping centre, in a building which is not owned by South Dublin County Council.

The plans for the library were welcomed by local Labour councillor Mick Duff, who praised the design proposals.

Cllr Duff told The Echo: “I welcome the new plans, as did many other councillors in the chamber.

“It’s unfortunate that the current library building won’t be used, but an agreement between the council and the building’s owner didn’t happen.

“I’m absolutely delighted about the decision to retain a library in Castletymon however, as there are a large amount of people who use the library on a day-to-day basis. The new plans include an internet cafe and it is a good site.

“My only concern would be parking issues, and hopefully the community that would have visited the library will continue to support the shopkeepers in Castletymon.

“I would urge the community to engage with the Part 8 process once it begins, and we would certainly be interested to hear the comments from the public.

“Everyone is entitled to make submissions once the plans go on display, and it would be great to see people engage with the process.

“The design for the new library, while smaller, are for a very bright and airy building similar to the fabulous library facility in Ballyroan and they will also help do away with an anti-social blackspot that is currently at the library site.”

The plans are expected to be put to the Part 8 public consultation process following a future meeting of South Dublin County Council, if approved by elected members.
