Championship joy for Thomas Davis hurlers

THOMAS Davis junior one hurlers landed the Junior ‘C’ Hurling Championship on Sunday as they overcame Raheny 1-15 to 1-14 in DCU Sports Complex.

Both sides were very evenly matched throughout in what proved to be an enthralling game.

Played on a very wet morning in DCU, both sides traded points early on with Thomas Davis’s Dean Gibbons (0-10, seven frees) proving vital finishing off some well-worked team scores.

Stephen O’Toole (1-1) got a vital goal midway through the first half as Colly McGrath (0-1) Kevin Mullarkey (0-1) and David Horan (0-1) also chipped in with first half points.

Raheny led by the minimum at half time as they went in with a 1-8 to 1-7 lead.

In the second half Thomas Davis gained control with the impressive Dillon Joyce and Jaques Dalton putting in strong displays in the Thomas Davis half backline along with goalie Caelan Brennan pulling off some vital saves.

David Horan played a key role and was influential in midfield with a dominant performance throughout.

Corner back Aaron Kilpatrick man-marked former Dublin footballer David Henry and curtailed him to just one-point from play over the hour.

Raheny trailed by three points heading into injury time as the Thomas Davis defence stood firm led by veteran full-back John Sheridan.

Two late points by Raheny reduced the deficit to just one-point but the Kiltipper lads just held out to record a fine championship victory.
