Checkmat competitors deliver in Emerald Cup
CHECKMAT Dublin recorded some impresssive performances at the Emerald Jiu Jitsu Cup held in DCU on Sunday.
First to step onto the mat for the Ballymount club was Violeta Sych who lined out in the Teen 3 Yellow Belt Under 60kg Kimono division along with Bernadette Collins from Kyuzo Jiu Jitsu and Izzy Leydier from SBG Dublin 24.
Lana Kelly chalked up two title wins in DCU
Up against Collins for a place in the decider, Sych pulled guard and choked the SBG athlete out to win by submission and set up a clash with Leydier.
Trailing her title match opponent, Sych drew on all of her technical ability to regain a strong position and choke out her opponent for the title.
Lana Kelly in the Teen 3 Orange and Green Belt Kimono division Under 65kg found herself in a re-match from the Irish Open against Julia Wiechcinska from Team Husaria/ Berserkers.
Having lost out on the referee’s decision in the Open, Kelly turned the tables on her opponent this time around, winning 6-0 with a beautiful sweep to mount, after which she controlled her opponent for the remainder of the fight.
She was next pitched against Abbie Sheridan, a green belt from SBG Charlestown, in a different age category, winning this fight with a beautiful Americana from mount.
The Ballymount club fielded Josh Scully in the Juvenile 2 Boys White Belt Kimono class in which he defeated Jack Mullen from SBG Ireland 17-0.
Scully has proven unstoppable since he lost in the semi final of the Irish Open having also won gold in the last Grappling Industries competition.
Nathan O’Callaghan, having been promoted to Blue belt by Head Coach John Kelly after less than a year training and winning the Junior Worlds at white belt and the IBJJF European Championships at Grey, came undone against Alex Keogh from SBG in the Juvenile 1 Under 64kg Blue Belt division.
Jamie Martin fighting in his first competition for Checkmat Dublin in the stacked Adult Middleweight Blue Belt field, beat Darragh Kelsey from BJJ Cork with his signature take down and submission in his quarter final match before losing to the eventual winner Charlie Quigley from East Coast Jiu Jitsu in the semi final and leaving with a bronze medal.
Taylor Evans lost by two points against Patrick Callan from Carlson Gracie Ireland in a superb battle while Danny McGrane was beaten on points by Adam Gargan from BJJ Revolution Team Ireland.
Competition newcomer Eoin Mulhall took his place in the White Master 1 Middle Heavy division and beat Rob Merrigan from SBG D24 4-0 in an explosive match.
Yet in the final, the Checkmat competitor suffered a 16-0 defeat at the hands of Eoin Mulcahy from Royal Grappling Academy.
