Clondalkin cap season with Provincial J2 Plate

CLONDALKIN RFC put the icing on a great season after a 17-10 point victory over Ashbourne saw their seconds land the Provincial J2 Plate in Gordon Park on Sunday.

After carving out a 17-0 lead, Clondalkin had to weather a spirited revival by their opponents in order to complete the double, having previously secured the Seconds Leinster League 1B title.

Tries from Dave Gaule and Bobby Smith helped hand the hosts the perfect start although Kelan Toolin did get Ashbourne off the mark with a penalty.

And when Conor Brennan went in at the corner and Toolin tagged o the extras, the visitors were right back in it.

Still Clondalkin managed to see it out, thanks in no small measure to Darren Madden who made a huge impact and at least one try-saving tackle.

Leinster Branch President Frank Doherty was on hand to present the prize to Clondalkin captain Stevie Cunningham.

Elsewhere the Clon-dalkin thirds, only a week after beating Terenure for the Metro Division 10 title, missed out of the Provincial J3 Cup after losing out to Portarlington.

On another note, Head Coach John Bagnall ended his five-year spell with Clondalkin and, to mark the occasion, a presentation was made to him by Club President Winston Jebb.

Bagnall played a huge part in developing young players and taking the club to a higher level.
