Clondalkin Drama The importance of being earnest
A local drama group based in Clondalkin will perform the famous play ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ by Oscar Wilde from July 10 to July 14.
These performances will take place in the upstairs area of the Black Lion Pub at 7:30pm each evening, reports Steven Reid.
“We’ve been wanting to do ‘Earnest’ for years and actually originally started rehearsing in February of 2020. Obviously we all know what happened a month later so we had to postpone it until after the pandemic,” says Michaela Courtney, the PR officer of the group.
The plot of the esteemed play is described as ‘A farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personae to escape burdensome social obligations’. To do so, both of the main protagonists pretend to be a man called “Earnest” to impress a woman. This ultimately backfires, and hilarity ensues.
“We’re delighted to be able to finally put it on,” says Michaela.
The Clondalkin Drama Group was originally formed in 1957 and: “Has been doing really well in the last few years,” according to Michaela.
The club is primarily known through the art of pantomime, which it performs each January, and has made it a priority to grow and build connections around the arts in Clondalkin Village.
Preparations for Earnest are going well according to Michaela.
“We’ve put the stage up and have started to rehearse in costume and without scripts, so everyone is really getting into character. Everyone is excited because it is such a fun play to do.
“We’ve really poured our heart and souls into this play so we would be honoured if people could come and see it.
“Our main goal as a group is to entertain people and to have a lot of fun doing it, and we want to share that with as many people as possible!”
Tickets will be available at the door. Prices are: €5 for opening night (July 10) €10 all other shows.
