Clondalkin Rugby Club – Raising funds with the help of funny man Dave Young

CLONDALKIN Rugby Football Club raised over €3,000 last month from their annual charity auction for at-risk teens, with some help from funnyman Dave Young.

For the past 30 years, Clondalkin RFC has hosted a charity auction which has primarily been in aid of Don Bosco Teenage Care, based in Clontarf.

Walkinstown-raised comedian Dave Young made a special guest appearance as the auctioneer on the night, which saw a signed British and Irish Lions rugby jersey fetch €800.

To add to their tradition, the club put on an adult panto this year, Robin Wood on Saturday, January 27, which starred players and coaches.

Club chair Gerry Gilligan spoke of the success of the night: “We had a crowd in excess of 100 people, which was a lot for the clubhouse.

“The panto was written by our president Chris McGlinn and was over-16s as it was slightly-risque.”

The charity was chosen due to longtime club member Kevin Laide’s involvement with Don Bosco.

Don Bosco Teenage Care offers a home to teenage boys who have to leave the family home, and residential aftercare for young people leaving the care system.

According to the Don Bosco website, the service works with young people with mental health issues, addiction issues and learning disabilities, “many of whom have experienced trauma and abuse in their lives.”

According to Mr Gilligan, Mr Laide has fostered over 20 boys in need of a home throughout the years.

Mr Gilligan said: “Kevin was one of the first single men that was legally allowed to foster a child.”
