Colmcille’s complete their march to the title

ST COLMCILLE’S Community School took the final step on the road to the SUBWAY All-Ireland Schools Girls Under 16C Basketball Cup after they chalked up a 46-35 victory over Jesus & Mary Gortnor Abbey in Tuesday’s final in the National Basketball Arena

Emma Mullins led the charge for St Colmcille’s in this decider, notching up a massive 30 points as they shook off their spirited opponents.

The Knocklyon side found themselves seven points up at the halftime break with good scores from Abbey Stacey and Hannah Byrne helping them enlarge the gap.

Caoimhe Walsh, with 13 points, together with Emily Murray and Niamh Maughan, on seven apiece, worked hard for Gortnor Abbey, but they were unable to eat into their opponents’ advantage.

It was a tremendous achievement for the school which has never before been involved on All-Ireland Schools Basketball Cup competition.

Taking many of their players from the local Templeogue Basketball Club as well as Ballyboden St Enda’s GAA Club, this Under 16 side is on course for a double having made it through the All-Ireland League qualifiers in Ennis last week.

It means they will face off against Pipers Hill from Naas in the semi finals next Thursday in the National Basketball Arena.

“It was a great all-round performance by the team in the final” said St Colm-cille’s Head Coach Audrey Rowland.

“We saw the potential in these players and so we decided to enter them into the cup.

“It’s a big commitment. They had to play a team in Waterford and then Old Bawn in the semi finals before Gortnor Abbey in the final,” she pointed out.

The school could well be in line for more All-Ireland Basketball Cup success this season having seen their Boys Under 19C team reach the semi finals of their respective national competition.
