Coming of age comedy that portrays Dublin teenage life comes to the Civic
The play ‘Frigid’, a coming of age comedy portraying the Dublin teenage experience comes to the Civic on June 27. The play is both written and performed by Rosa Bowden and is the winner of numerous awards, reports Steven Reid.
‘Frigid’ chronicles the struggles of Niamh O’Reilly, who at age 14, has never been kissed, and is therefore known as a ‘fridget’. One night at the disco, her friends are determined to change that, whether she agrees to participate or not.
The ensuing story grapples with: “Innocence and discovery and fun – and mortification and terror” according to the Irish Times.
This confection of themes challenges the ideas about how teenagers define themselves and is a testament to “first times, and figuring it out”.
Reviews Hub called it: “An amazing comedy, with heart-wrenching and tender moments.” The Arts Review noted ‘Frigid’ is a: “One woman performance of utter charm,” and the Irish Independent described it as: “A sharp picture of Dublin teen life.”
Directed by Hildegard Ryan, ‘Frigid’ is highly acclaimed, and has been honored with the Bewley’s Little Gem award, the Best New Play at the Dublin Fringe Festival award, and also received a Best Performer nomination at the Fringe Festival.
