Commercials make it past Barrog and into title match

A FIRST-RATE performance by ex-Dublin footballer Noelle Comyn helped send Commercials to the Junior Two Camogie Championship Final as they beat Naomh Barrog 2-7 to 2-4.

The Rathcoole side put on a classy display in Kilbarrick on Sunday with substitute Aoife Richardson scoring a superb solo goal to double her side’s lead in the second half and seal a place in the final.

Ciara Clohessy opened the scoring for the visitors when she picked the sliotar up on the right-wing and cut inside to fire over off her left.

The travelling side were dealt a blow from the outset when their ever-reliable captain Sarah Ryan was taken off injured after putting her body in between a shot and the goal.

Scores where hard to come-by on the morning with both sides trading blows, but Commercials went into half-time with a 0-4 to 0-2 lead as Noelle Comyn popped over a couple of placed balls.

Naomh Mearnog came flying out in the second-half and bagged a goal, but Commercials responded almost immediately through half-forward Comyn.

She then burst through the centre towards goal, sliotar on hurl, before propelling a shot under the keeper to make it 1-4 to 1-2.

Clohessy picked up her second of three points while covering every blade of grass before substitute Aoife Richardson produced an outstanding solo goal to double her side’s lead.

Indeed, she slotted into the inside-forward line and made an opportunity out of thin-air when she broke down the right beating three players, cutting onto her favoured left side and forcing a great stop from the Naomh Marnog keeper before pouncing on the rebound.

With the final puc of the match, the Kilbarrick side netted, but it was merely a consolation as the damage had been already done by the Commercials frontline.

Commercials will face-off against rivals St Jude’s in the Junior Two Camogie Championship Final in Abbottstown this Sunday at 1:45pm.
