Corkagh Park €5m booster begins with turning of the sod
A SOD-TURNING ceremony has taken place for the €5 million regeneration works in Corkagh Park, marking the commencement of construction for the ambitious project.
It was announced in 2022 that the council would be investing €5m in Corkagh Park for the development of a new hub zone featuring a café, public toilets and multi-use events space.
This multi-use events space will include a stage and hard-standing area and it is envisaged it will be used on market days by vendors, and throughout the year for events including health activities and arts performances.
Meanwhile, space to the east of the new café will provide seating and room for users to enjoy throughout the year.
Located on the former pet farm in the park, the regeneration project forms part of the council’s three-year capital budget.
Previously, questions were asked about the re-introduction of the pet farm, but it was said that planners and designers found it was not viable for this development.
Other features planned are enhancements to the fairy woodland trail, new pedestrian links, removal and replacement of trees in poor health, along with planting and landscape associated works.
With McAvoy Contracts Ltd set to carry out the works on site, Mayor Alan Edge turned the sod on the site to mark the beginning of construction.
“The works about to commence will include the creation of a new ‘hub zone’ with a café building, public toilets, a multi-use events space with a stage, plaza area, seating and new planting,” Mayor Edge said.
“As part of this project the existing carparks at St John’s Road and the Green Isle Road will be improved, to include re-surfacing and upgraded pedestrian and cycling links.
“The Fairy Woodland Trail will be enhanced to include new play features, seating and a footpath to the lakes. Wayfinding and signage will also be upgraded throughout the park.”
