Council tree-maintenance programme branches out

THE focus of South Dublin County Council’s tree-maintenance programme is now being based on entire roads or estates, with a full survey of all trees within an area being carried out.
Last week, the council has been spotted on Sylvan Drive in Kingswood, where two trees have been identified for removal.
Some trees are earmarked for removal
While Sylvan Drive was not listed on the 2017–2019 Tree Maintenance Programme, the council said these two trees were inspected recently and recommended for removal.
According to Teresa Walsh, Director of Environment, Water and Climate Change: “In advance of commencing works within an estate or road, a full survey of all trees at the location is carried out to inform the programme and scheduling of tree pruning.
“The survey involves an assessment of each tree’s health and condition and identifies the maintenance required, if any.”
Ms Walsh added: “In addition to the planned whole estate and road programme, reactive and emergency works will continue to be carried out on individually located trees as necessary in order to manage risks to the public.
“Emergency and reactive tree works will normally take priority over the planned programme of tree maintenance works.”
According to the council, Ashfield estate in Kingswood has been listed for a planned programme of tree maintenance, with a full survey of all trees in the area being undertaken to determine the extent of maintenance.
The maintenance work in Ashfield is scheduled to start in six or eight weeks.
Some tree-pruning works were carried out in Ashfield in January and February of this year, however, the remaining works require a hoist.
