Councillor resigns ‘with regret’ due to change in personal circumstances

LIAM Sinclair resigned as a South Dublin County councillor last week due to “a change in [his] personal circumstances”.

Mr Sinclair was a first-time candidate in the local elections in 2019, when he was elected as Green Party councillor for the Tallaght Central constituency.

In 2021, when he was the leader of the Green Party in South Dublin County Council, Mr Sinclair left his party as he did not support the Programme for Government.

He also did not agree that his party’s carbon tax proposals were fair on those on lower incomes, and chose to leave the party while he was still on good terms with his former party colleagues.

Mr Sinclair was initially an independent after he rescinded his membership of the Green Party, before going on to represent An Rabharta Glas – Green Left.

However, last Thursday Mr Sinclair officially tendered his resignation from South Dublin County Council and published a post on Facebook explaining why he decided to leave.

“It’s with regret that, due to a change in my personal circumstances, I will be resigning my position as a county councillor,” he wrote.

“The timing isn’t ideal but circumstances have dictated that this change is coming slightly earlier than I had hoped for.

“I am very honest about the difficulties faced being an elected rep, particularly when you’re one that brings an alternative point of view.

“Still, this has not been an easy decision. The time I have spent doing this has been valuable.

“I have had a platform to speak about things that matter and gotten attention for causes that would otherwise have been ignored.

“Ultimately, I have to put the needs of my family first and it’s with them front of mind that I have made this decision.”

He also wrote: “It was a privilege to have represented my neighbours, workers and carers and to have fought for positive environmental action.

“I resign feeling like I have played my part. I hope some can take inspiration from that.”
