
Coyne and Walshe make their mark
TALLAGHT Swim Club’s Niamh Coyne and Templeogue’s Ellen Walshe made their presence felt in at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Indianapolis.
The former finished tied in 16th place in 1:10.88 in the heat of her 100m Breaststroke subsequently forcing a swim off against Belgium’s Anke Geeroms at the end of the session.
Coyne stormed to victory in a time of 1:09.67, her first time to go under 1 minute 10 seconds.
It propelled her through to the semi-final where she again went under 1:10, touching home fifth and moving six places up the rankings for tenth overall in 1:09.83.
Prior to that Coyne made the semi-finals of the 50m Breaststroke where she carded a finishing time of 32.56 seconds for a 14th place finish overall.
Walshe (Butterfly), meanwhile, combined with Conor Ferguson (Backstroke), Mona McSharry (Breaststroke) and Robbie Powell (Freestyle) to shave almost two seconds off the Irish Senior Record in the Mixed Medley Relay as they came home sixth in three minutes 52.38 seconds.
Elsewhere at the World University Games, Tallaght’s Brendan Hyland finished up 19th in his heat of the 100m Butterfly, clocking 53.49 seconds.
