Crumlin boxing secure 11 gold medals in All-Ireland juniors

CRUMLIN Boxing Club recorded a record 11 gold medals at the All-Ireland Junior Championships in the National Stadium.

Over the years, Crumlin has established itself as one of the premier boxing clubs in the country, producing an Irish champion in every year since its re-establishment in 1992.

This year, they continued that tradition by producing a further 11 national champions, an all-time high for the club, while three others fell just short in the finals, settling for silver medals.

One of the brightest talents in the Crumlin club, Robyn Carlyle upheld her unbeaten record on Irish soil when she claimed the Girl Four 57kg title.

In seizing her fourth All-Ireland medal, the talented southpaw used her wit and dragged her opponent Alana Harrington of De Courcey ABC into deep water to win by stoppage in the first round.

Twins Aleigha and Alannah Murphy also managed to record stoppages, becoming one of the first set of girl twins to win titles at the same national finals.

In the Girl Two 41kg final, Alannah recorded a win by stoppage in the third round before Aleigha stepped up to win the 43kg title with a first-round stoppage.

They were not the only siblings fighting out of Crumlin to win titles, with Heney Mahai storming to the Boy Two 46kg title before his brother Joseph claimed the Boy Four 54kg medal.

Joseph Maai beat Willie O’Donoghue from Templemore in the semi-final before narrowly outboxing Ballina’s Sean Maughan in the decider, winning on a 3-2 split decision.

Mia Doyle won her first national title when she won the Girl Two 33kg final while Alanna Berry (Girl Two, 35kg) and John Maughan (Youth One, 46kg) also stormed to their respective titles.

Christopher Stokes, who travels from Waterford to train in Crumlin three times a week, won his first national gold when he won the Youth One 85kg showpiece.

After winning her first title last year, Heidi Redmond became a two-time national champion when she beat Lucie Prentiss of Ballyboughal BC to the Girl Two 49kg title.

Beaten in his last two finals, Kristian Jubani finally reached the hollowed land when he claimed gold in the Boy Three 38.5kg decider.

Meanwhile, Christy Nevin and Phelim Hogan came heartbrokenly close to titles but were undone by split decision losses while Lynn Daly had to withdraw from her decider – with all three settling for silver medals.
