Crumlin Inters remain top

CRUMLIN United remained unbeaten and top of the LSL Senior Division table following their 3-1 triumph over Portmarnock at Armagh Road on Sunday.

The homeside opened up their account early on when a Portmarnock corner was cleared and the homeside countered with Alan McGreal eventually taking possession in the box where he carved out some space to shoot home.

He almost doubled his and his side’s tally minutes later, but his effort travelled narrowly wide with the Portmarnock netminder beaten.

The northsiders were almost back on level terms 20 minutes in, but goalkeeper Michael Quinn came to their rescue with a superb save when forced into action from a corner.

Again the breaking ball caught out Portmarnock out and put Crumlin on a counter attack and this time Conor Murphy applied the finishing touch from almost the same position as McGreal’s earlier strike.

Matters grew worse for the visitors soon after the break as Craig Walsh made it 3-0 when he found the back of the net with an excellent effort from the left side of the box that caught out the Portmarnock keeper .

Minutes later Walsh was forced to retire injured and Portmarnock reduced their arrears when substitute Christopher Burghes let fly to the target.

Goalkeeper Quinn was forced into another great save, diving down to the left to push the ball around the post and avoiding a very nervous close to the match for his side.

Still, Portmarnock had the bit between their teeth, but they never got in on the Crumlin keeper again.

Indeed, the Crumlin back four were solid and often ignited swift counters that kept the visitors very much on their toes.
