Cuckoo’s Nest estate to be finished by the end of year
By Mary Dennehy
WORK has started on a 39-house development on the Cuckoo’s Nest site, with the new estate expected to be finished by the end of the year.
The new estate, which will comprise of 39, three-bed homes, is to be called Temple Woods, with The Echo awaiting a reply from site managers, DNG, on the significance of this name for the area.
The commencement of work caused a stir this week when eagle-eyed locals spotted that the address for Temple Woods on Daft.ie was Greenhills Road, Dublin 12.
Commenting on Twitter, Labour Party councillor Mick Duff wrote: “A pub that had a proud tradition in Tallaght, Dublin 24, but now by the magic advertising has moved to Greenhills, Dublin 12.”
However, when contacted by The Echo, DNG said that there was an issue with its Daft page and that the address was being amended from Dublin 12 to Dublin 24.
Following its closure in 2015, the Cuckoo’s Nest and its 4.5 acres of land went on the market earlier this year for a guide price of €4m – with the site being sold with planning permission for a residential estate to the rear of the pub.
The planning permission also provides for renovations to the pub itself and the demolition of Tallaght Theatre – which will be reconstructed in the north-west corner of the site.
The planning permission granted provides for 45 units, 20 three-bed, two storey semi-detached houses, 19 three-bed, two storey terraced houses and six two-bed apartments in a three storey building – with the apartments not being advertised as they are social housing, and won’t be up for sale.
In an interview with The Echo in December, Bernard Lynch, whose parents Phyllis and the late Peadar bought the pub in the sixties, said he was unsure what the future held for the original Cuckoo’s Nest building.
Mr Lynch, who is hoping to get into discussions with the new owner about re-opening a pub onsite, said: “Since the fire a year ago the pub has not been in good shape, I don’t know if the building is economically viable.”
However, Kate Mullery of DNG, which is managing the site, this week told The Echo: “There is no confirmation on the Cuckoo’s Nest [building].
“However it is most likely that it will be turned into a gastro pub.”
She added: “There is not a lot of new homes being built in this area and we expect the development to go quite well.
“We will be launching late April… and at this stage have no estimated price [for homes].
“This location is so close to everything, the location is second to none.
“We hope to be finished this year, all going well.”
