Cycled length of Portugal for mental health charity
A TALLAGHT man was among a group of over 50 cyclists who completed a 738km cycling route in Portugal last week in aid of mental health charity Cycle Against Suicide.
Raul Crenier from Tallaght cycled the Nacional 2 (N2) route from Chaves to Faro, spanning the entire length of Portugal, across six days alongside the other cyclists.
“I have cycled all my life, and it helps me keep fit physically and mentally,” said Raul.
“I heard about the work Cycle Against Suicide do and wanted to get involved to help them.
“It was a challenging ride through mountains and valleys.
“The temperature reached 43 degrees one of the days.
“I was in the saddle for 28 hours in total, but it was enjoyable and a real achievement for everyone.
“For some of the riders, this was the longest ride they had ever attempted.
“Everyone completed it, and most were motivated as they had a personal experience of struggling with mental health or loss through suicide.
“Listening to their stories was humbling and helped motivate everyone to support each other and complete the cycle.”
In a Facebook post, a Cycle Against Suicide spokesperson praised the cyclists for their impressive achievement.
“Massive congratulations to each and every one of our N2 participants,” they wrote, “and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for undertaking this challenge in support of Cycle Against Suicide.”
The money raised from the event will be used to support Cycle Against Suicide’s programmes, which train people in schools, workplaces and the community in mental health support and awareness.
