Delany and Waldron in for T20 World Cup European qualifier
BOTH Laura Delany and Mary Waldron have been included in the 14-player Ireland Women’s Cricket squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup European Qualifier set to take place in Spain between August 26 and 31.
Delany, a native of Knocklyon, will captain Ireland in the six-team tournament which is set to be played in a round-robin format at La Manga Club.
Ireland, who are currently ranked 10th in the world of T20 cricket, will compete against the likes of Scotland and Netherlands – teams they beat in home series contests this summer.
The highest ranked team in the qualifiers in Spain, Ireland will also be competing alongside Germany, France and Turkey.
There is one available spot up for grabs in the T20 World Cup Qualifying tournament.
Having surpassed Isobel Joyce for most Irish matches captained, Delany will be hoping to capitalise on momentum built up by way of T20 series wins over Scotland in May and Netherlands in July.
Meanwhile, Bohernabreena native Mary Waldron will be hoping to bring the wealth of experience she has built up across three T20 World Cups into yet another T20 World Cup European qualifier.
Speaking ahead of the tounament, Head Coach of Ireland Women’s Cricket team, Ed Joyce was upbeat about his selection.
“With only one side going through from here, it will be a challenging week – but what’s definitely pleasing for me is that I was confident no matter which 14 players were selected, we’ll be taking a talented, eager and hungry group to Spain that are capable of competing on all fronts,” he said.
