Passionate guides will take visitors on a journey through Irish history, visiting the graves of Ireland’s ‘heroes, heroines, rogues, rebels and revolutionaries’.
Many icons of Irish history are laid to rest in Glasnevin, such as Michael Collins, Charles Stewart Parnell, Maude Gonne MacBride, Brendan Behan and Luke Kelly, to name just a few.
According to a spokesperson for Glasnevin: “There is inspiration around every corner, and with over 1.6 million stories buried in Glasnevin, there is no shortage of tales to tell.
“Visitors gain a heightened sense of understanding of Irish history, and a deeper appreciation of Glasnevin’s never forgotten residents.”
The very first burial took place on 22 February 1832, when the coffin of a young boy from Francis Street was placed into a small patch of ground on the north-side of Dublin.
“From such humble beginnings arose a national cemetery which would become the final resting place of over 1.6 million people”, the spokesperson said.
“Among them figures that helped to shape Ireland’s past and present – the rich and famous, paupers and politicians, artists, warriors and heroes, all resting peacefully in this renowned Victorian Garden Cemetery.”
Ireland’s national cemetery also has 124 acres to roam.
The General History Tour runs hourly from 10.30am to 3.30pm throughout August, and takes in the graves of those who shaped the course of Irish history.
The tour also includes a visit to Daniel O’Connell’s crypt.
