Doona confident Pat’s can get back on track

ST PATRICK’S Athletic midfielder James Doona believes the Inchicore side are well capable of bagging full points when they travel to the Carlisle Grounds to face strugglers Bray Wanderers tonight.

While the Wicklow side is currently rooted to the bottom of the Airtricity Premier League table, they have managed to take points of current top four sides Waterford United and Derry City in May.

Doona, therefore, is taking nothing for granted saying “Every match in this league is difficult, but we’ve shown that, on our day, we can beat anyone.

“Bray had a bad start to the season, but have got a couple of good results of late. If we can just get the ball down and play I feel we can beat them.”

After a run of four straight wins, St Pat’s have shipped defeats in their last two games against near neighbours Shamrock Rovers and defending champions Cork City.

Doona was particularly disappointed with their 3-1 defeat against the Leesiders in Richmond Park last Friday, insisting that their performance deserved something more.

Indeed, Liam Buckley’s side fought back from a goal down when Doona’s shot rebounded into the path of Conan Byrne and he tucked it away.

And they almost edged in front when Doona set up captain Ian Bermingham for a shot, but his effort hit the framework and instead goals from Jimmy Keohane and Kieran Sadlier saw Cork return home from Inchicore with full points for the second time this season.

Disappointed

“We’re disappointed with the last two defeats, especially after the run we’d been on,” said Doona.

“Against Cork we had most of the game. We got it back to 1-1, and then Ian has that chance and hits the bar. If that had gone in it would have been a whole different end to the match.

“Everybody could see the chances we had in the second half, but we just didn’t take them.”

Satisfied with his own performance in that outing, Doona added, “In the second half when I began to get more touches of the ball, I played better, creating that goal and setting up Ian for that shot. I feel there’s a lot more to come from me.”
