Drop-in workshop at Rua Red to celebrate Cruinniú na nÓg

In celebration of Cruinniú na nÓg, Rua Red is holding a drop-in workshop led by artist Morag Myerscough from 2:30pm to 6pm on June 10 as part of the initial development of an exciting new large-scale installation.

The flagship initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme’s Creative Youth Plan and the only national day of its kind, Cruinniú na nÓg engages young people’s creativity with free programming throughout the country in the form of workshops, tutorials, readings and recitals in a range of creative disciplines.

Previously commissioned by cities and leading institutions, Morag transforms public space exteriors through community-rooted artwork shaped from dialogue with community groups around their sense of identity, cultural history and local heritage.

Bringing her (literally) monumental work to South Dublin, Myerscough has been working with award-winning Dublin-based creatives including multidisciplinary artist Ella Bertilsson, journalist and visual artist Ala Buisir, and musician Alicia Raye to run a series of workshops exploring the idea of belonging with youth who have faced displacement and marginalisation.

So far, the discussions have fuelled the creation of vibrant panels presenting the youths’ individual responses to the concept of belonging, which will be showcased at the June 10 public workshop.

The works mark the beginning stages of a large-scale installation artwork set for display at the Rua Red Gallery to be built with the community throughout the next year.

For Cruinniú na nÓg, a lively selection of other events will be held throughout South Dublin including in Clondalkin, Lucan, Jobstown, Tallaght, Walkinstown and Adamstown plus online events on June 10.

Events include artistic performances following local youth’s participation in multi-week workshops, creative performances and workshops for young children and teens, and an interactive street festival.
