Dunne brings more joy to Jobstown

JOBSTOWN BC’s Ryan Dunne marked his club’s fourth anniversary in style after he captured the National Under 18 49kg title following his 5-0 victory over Cookstown’s Craig Bigger in the National Stadium on Saturday night.

The victory on the very weekend of Jobstown BC’s anniversary took the club’s tally of national honours for the year to eight, helping to make it their most successful season ever.

Jobstown Boxing Club’s Ryan Dunne celebrates winning the National Under 18 49kg title.

The Tallaght lad did not drop a solitary round throughout this campaign, taking three unanimous decisions en route to the prize.

Indeed he ignited his quest with a 5-0 triumph over Eric Walsh of Marble City in the quarter finals before serving up an equally convincing win against Crumlin’s Karl Sheridan in the penultimate rounds.

While he took the final against Bigger quite comfortably, Ryan had to negotiate the decider with caution as Jobstown coach Amanda Spencer explained “Craig Bigger is a very skilled, technical boxer, but Ryan just out-boxed him.

“He performed really well against a very clever opponent. He landed the most punches and used his feet well to avoid being hit himself.

“It was his first time fighting in three-minute rounds, but he’s well fit. He trains so hard,” she added.

Dunne was eligible to contest last year’s National Under 18s but had to have his appendix out the week before the weigh-ins and so missed out on the competition.

“He was so determined to compete in them this season, and he worked so hard throughout the whole year for this very moment,” said Spencer.

The Tallaght competitor really made the breakthrough last year when he secured his first ever All-Ireland after winning out in the National Youth Two 46kg.

That was followed up with victory in the Monkstown International Box Cup in which he again saw off some tough competition.

He will now be turning his attention to competing on the European Youth Championship stage after the Ireland panel was officially announced for the competition which takes place in Bulgaria in September.

What’s more, Jobstown, supported by Jobstown House, will be bringing a team of 16 to Sweden for an international tournament in November.
