€2.8m state-of-the-art library in Castletymon opens to public

AN EXCITING time for the community as the new state-of-the-art €2.8m Castletymon Library is set to open its doors after a long wait.

The new library, which is located on Castletymon Road, adjacent to the junction with Tymon North Gardens, will be opening to the public on September 1.

As previously reported in The Echo, the original Castletymon Library closed in December 2017, when South Dublin County Council stated that they would not seek to renew the lease on the building as they claimed it was “unsuitable for occupation” and decided to develop a brand-new library building instead.

Work on the new library commenced in January 2019 but experienced delays due to a fire on the construction site that happened in July 2019 and Covid-19 restrictions pushed work back even further.

The new library will be an important feature in the community and will offer services and facilities which include self-service kiosks, a 3D printer, computer and study spaces, free Wi-Fi throughout the building, and printing and photocopying services as well as shelves filled with books, audio books, DVDs and video games.

Speaking with The Echo, Geraldine O’Meara, Senior Executive Librarian at Castletymon Library said that all of the staff are “very excited” to finally open.

“We have had people go by stopping at the door asking us when we are opening so people are really on board for it and excited to have this facility in the community – we just can’t wait to open,” she said.

“It is great to have a brand-new facility like this in there and I think we are going to be very busy.”

An official launch will take place on September 16 to mark the occasion of the library opening, with the staff gearing up to welcome the public in.

The library currently employs seven staff, all of which are “excellent and enthusiastic,” says Geraldine.

“I think the staff are really going to hit the ground running and everyone’s just going to love them.”

The library will be open from 9:45am-8:00pm Monday to Thursday and 9:45am-4:30pm Friday and Saturday and all current government guidelines will be adhered to.
