€22m allocated for cycling and pedestrian infrastructure

OVER €22m has been allocated to South Dublin County Council by the National Transport Authority for the development of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

The highest level of funding, totalling €4m, has been awarded to the fourth section of the Dodder Greenway, encompassing Springfield Avenue and Dodder Road Lower.

A total of €2.5m has been ring-fenced for the D24 Neighbourhood Cycle Network, €1.75m is for the Clonburris Southern Link Street, while €1m is for the Castletymon District Centre Enhancement Project.

Staff costs for the Active Travel office has received an allocation of €700k, as has the Tallaght to Knocklyon Active Travel Scheme.

The Grand Canal to Lucan Urban Greenway has received an allocation of €600k, the Airton Road Extension has received €500k, as has schools’ infrastructure in Clondalkin and Palmerstown.

Rapid Deployment Cycle Facilities have also received funding, namely Glendown Road (€300k), Airton Road (€200k), the R136 in Lucan (€150k), and Doddsborough Road (€50k).

Anne Graham, CEO of the National Transport Authority said: “2023 is going to be an important [year] for active travel.

“With a growing number of active travel schemes moving from design into construction and delivery, we can encourage more people across the country to walk or cycle within and beyond their local community.

“The funding being announced today will allow the NTA to continue to work alongside local authorities as we accelerate the delivery of improved cycling and walking infrastructure.

“From new segregated cycle lanes and footpaths, to dedicated pedestrian and cycling bridges, the active travel projects receiving funding will make it easier and safer for people to choose active travel modes.

“The extensive work being undertaken in partnership with Active Travel teams within Councils nationwide will help improve the health and wellbeing of our communities and make them more accessible and attractive for everyone.”
