ELLYD flying high – Busy times ahead for singer-songwriter
By Cody Hutchison
Singer songwriter ELLYD debuted her first headline show of original music at Whelan’s recently.
Following her successful EP ‘Lighthouse’ earlier this year, the alternative pop artist from Clondalkin, aired the first play of her highly anticipated new single ‘Close’ at the intimate show.
The electro pop tune, a far cry from ELLYD’s previous offerings, perfectly blends exotic synths with sing along celestial harmonies.
Recorded at Jam Studios with Martin Quin, the sumptuous production only elevates ELLYD’s honest and heartfelt lyrics to a whole new level.
The singer, whose voice has been compared to the sultry haunting vocals of Gemma Hayes & Skye Edwards, first honed her talent by touring across Europe while also becoming a regular on the Irish music circuit.
After many years on the Irish music scene, she released her debut solo EP ‘Rise’ reaching number 8 in the iTunes charts.
Following the success of her first release, ELLYD has played some of Ireland’s biggest festivals and top venues including Electric Picnic, The Secret Village Festival, Battle of the Lake Festival, The Button Factory, Whelan’s and The Workman’s Club.
ELLYD said she loved hitting the studio this time around to record ‘Close’ and said she enjoyed the process.
“Close was created very quickly. I was messing around with my vocal loop pedal one day and I was doing a bit of beat boxing on it.
“I kept that on loop for a while and started playing my guitar around it. Then the melody and words came.
“After I had the structure sorted I added all the instruments and sounds. When I brought it into studio, we finished it pretty quickly too.
“The demo was good enough that we were able to transfer a lot of what I recorded, straight over to the studio and therefore didn’t have as much more work to do.”
Exciting time for Irish music
She also said that she loves the current Irish music scene, she added: “It’s a hugely exciting time for Irish music. The amount of talented new bands and artists coming out at the moment is insane.
“The last few years have been incredible for National and international Irish music and I’m absolutely addicted to it.”
ELLYD said she is looking forward to the rest of the summer as she hits the festival circuit and has plans to go overseas to tour.
“I’ll be playing Indiependence this weekend. I’ll be on the sing along stage on the Saturday and I can’t wait for it.
“I’ve never been down to it so I’m mega excited. I’m also delighted to be back at Electric Picnic this year too.
“After that I’ll be hitting London in the winter time to do some gigs over there which I’m incredibly excited about.”
ELLYD will be hitting the stage at Indiependence on Saturday in Mitchelstown, Co Cork.
Those heading to the festival can catch her on The Sing Song Stage at 6.30pm.
She will also be playing Electric Picnic in September.
