Emily7 have big plans for the future

AN ambitious indie rock duo, who hail from the Jobstown area of Tallaght, are planning to make their mark on the Irish music scene with their upcoming gigs.

Brothers Kyle, 19, and Scott Bellew, 16, are newcomers to the Irish music scene, having only recently released a series of demos after their band officially formed last year.

The duo, who have both attended Mount Seskin Community College, list The Strokes, The Libertines and Oasis among their varied collection of influences.

The two brothers told The Echo about why they chose the name Emily 7, how the band came to be and their plans for the future.

Why did you pick the name Emily 7?

Scott: We decided on the name Emily 7 because we just thought it sounded cool, and it sounds better than Bobby 6!

Kyle: We didn’t want to pick a band name with “The” in it, because it seems that most bands these days – especially bands our age – have “The” in their name, and we wanted to stand out from other bands.

Have you always wanted to be musicians?

Scott: Yes, I have always wanted to be a musician, because no other job appeals to me.

Kyle: I’ve always loved music, but it wasn’t until I saw a video of Johnny Marr performing with The Smiths on Top of the Pops that I thought, “Yeah that looks cool, that’s what I want to do”.

Why did you both decide to form a band?

Scott: We never decided that we were going to be a band as such, it just happened. I played drums and Kyle played guitar, and when we started jamming to some songs that Kyle had written, Emily 7 was formed.

What’s the best experience you’ve had so far as part of Emily 7?

Scott: Somebody sent me a video not too long ago of them singing one of our songs, so I thought that was a pretty cool experience. Also, we met Brian May from Queen and we told him about our band, and he said that he really liked the band name, so that was pretty cool.

Kyle: The best experience for me, so far, is just the positive reaction that we’ve been getting from the songs.

What kind of feedback have you been getting about your music?

Scott: We’re getting really good feedback about our music, both in Ireland and abroad, which is deadly.

Kyle: People are telling us that they think our music is unique and it’s a breath of fresh air to the Dublin music scene. It’s unreal, because we’ve had people in the UK getting in touch with us to tell us that they really love our music, and a radio station in England is frequently playing one of our songs which is unreal.

What can people expect from an Emily 7 gig?

Scott: People can expect something unique from our gigs, because we’re loud, energetic, and have catchy songs. I don’t think Ireland has ever produced a band like us before.

Kyle: People can expect to be blown away. We genuinely believe that we’re the best band in the country at the minute, and our gigs will be completely different to other bands’ gigs.

Are there any plans for an Emily 7 EP or single in the near future?

Scott: We won’t be releasing a single or EP any time soon. We’re just going to concentrate on playing as many gigs as possible, so we can try to expand our fanbase.

Kyle: We’ll definitely record some more demos, but we won’t be releasing a single or EP soon because we want to build a strong fan base nationwide. We want to have played a serious amount of gigs and for there to be a genuine buzz around us – not only in Dublin – before we even consider releasing a single.

Emily 7 will play The Grand Social on March 1. To find out more, you can follow Emily 7 on Facebook.
