Empowering our young people with the thrill and the joy of sea-fishing

A NUMBER of youths from the Killinarden Youth Project attended a sea-fishing event hosted by Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative in Arklow`s South Beach in County Wicklow.
The Sean McMorrow Memorial Sea Fishing Day, which was aimed at furthering the skills of sea fishing, was attended by 24 youths from Killinarden.
Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative aims to promote, develop and improve angling in the Greater Dublin Area through educational fishing courses for young people.
This event was one of several being hosted by Inland Fisheries Ireland over the summer months.
Fishing was steady throughout the day with some good size fish landed, including flounder, plaice, dogfish and bass.
The young anglers also enjoyed a lunch at the venue. Participants were tutored in casting, bait presentation, types of bait and the safe handling and return of fish.
At the conclusion, the Sean McMorrow Memorial Trophy was presented to Conor and Eoin O`Neill who displayed great skill and focus at catching fish throughout the day.
Oisin Cahill, Co-ordinator of Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative said: “The Dublin Angling Initiative aims to empower young people to enjoy angling and appreciate the importance of conservation and protection. The combination of theoretical and practical lessons proves to be popular and we are delighted to be hosting a number of educational initiatives and courses over the next few weeks.”
