End of Season wins for JKS Tallaght

THIRTEEN members of JKS Tallaght participated recently in the Kanazawa Cup 2023, the last karate event of the 2022-2023 season.

The tournament was held in Tallaght Leisure Centre and boasted a huge turnout of over 300 competitors from 32 karate clubs nationally.

JKS Tallaght members performed well in the large categories, and all received Certificates for Participation as well as taking home valuable experience from their time on the mats.

The Club was also delighted with its medal winners on the day, given the large categories.

The highlights for the club in the Kata discipline were Tony McDowells performance of Heian Sandan in the Veterans (Over 40’s) Mixed Kata which earned him a bronze medal, while Codey Kelly, despite suffering from a broken arm, secured bronze in the large 11yrs -12yrs Boys Kata category with his delivery of Heian Sandan.

Yasmine Lynott delivered a measured performance through the rounds and held her nerve in the final of the 15yrs-17yrs Mixed Kata to take home gold for her performance of Heian Yondan.

Medals were also forthcoming for the club in the Kumite sections.

Isabella Maher fought exceptionally well for a beginner and secured silver with her clean-cut gyaku-zuki punches in the 9yrs-10yrs Girls Kumite.

Ryleigh Bolger was fast with his kizami-zuki punches in the 9yrs-10yrs Boys Kumite and this earned him a bronze medal in what was another large category.

Yasmine Lynott did the double on the day, adding a gold for kumite to her gold for kata, with excellent scoring in the 13yrs -15yrs Girls Kumite.

“I am delighted with today’s results” Instructor Philip Kennedy said.

“It can be tough when the categories are big, not everyone will make it through to the medal rounds, and this can be disappointing for some kids.

“But all JKS Tallaght members equipped themselves admirably, learning from this experience, and representing the club proudly.

“I am very proud of them all.”
