English targeting marathon hat-trick
By Stephen Leonard
KEVIN English will be targeting three marathon wins in two weeks when he lines out in the Wexford Marathon this coming Sunday.
After setting a new course record on his way to the ‘Lap of the Gap’ title late last month, the Kilnamanagh man then won the Rock and Road Marathon in Kinvara (Galway) on Saturday in a course record of 2.46.12.
His superb performance saw him home 11 minutes ahead of his closest challenger Thomas Shanahan.
Looking back on his latest victory, English said: “I had a Spanish runner for company until around the 14-mile mark.
“The pace was steady in the first few miles and I threw in a few surges, but couldn’t shake him.
“At 11 miles I found myself 50m down, but was back level at 12 and at 19 miles I was 800m ahead and coasted home for a comfortable victory.
English is in confident mood ahead of the Wexford Marathon saying, “This year I have increased my mileage, averaging 90 miles per week.
“The course [for the Wexford Marathon] looks a good one and I’d like to go sub 2.45,” he added.
