Environmental group awarded grant to inspire positive action

Dublin 12 environmental group Crumlin Community Cleanup were announced as recipients of the Community Foundation for Ireland’s Circular Economy Grant, offered in association with the Environmental Protection Agency.

The group made up of local volunteers is set to receive a total of €3,000 to raise awareness around the concept of the ‘circular economy’, a regenerative way of looking at the world that encourages people to waste less and reuse more.

The grant was initially applied for when volunteers noticed a problem with food waste and dumping in the Crumlin locale. Each week, they were picking up on average 60-80 bags of refuse from public paths, roads and recreational areas.

Speaking on the issue, Trevor Mac Labhradha, Secretary of Crumlin Community Cleanup Group said: “As a group, we want to take positive action and we’re looking forward to introducing an integrated on-street and social media campaign that will hopefully get the people of Crumlin thinking about how they can reuse more and throw away less in their day to day lives.

“Personal actions are just one step we can all take on the road towards creating a better, more sustainable future, so I’m encouraging everyone to take part in some small way if they can.”

Denise Charlton, Chief Executive of The Community Foundation for Ireland had the following to add: “The objective of our 2021 Circular Economy funding strand is to support organisations working within this space to deliver projects that will combat excess consumption and reduce waste in the community.
