Shocking that grab truck enters estate to pick up household waste every week

EACH week the council has to send a grab truck into Brookview to remove the high volume of dumped household waste beside the play space - an escalating situation which has prompted calls for residents to report those responsible for destroying their community.
Brookview is just one of a number of estates being destroyed by illegal dumping, with the actions of a few having serious implications on the wellbeing of the rest of the community.
The rubbish in Brookview is also being dumped in and around the play space, posing a health and safety risk to playing children.
The waste, which is dumped in the same location each week, is also encouraging rats into the area, with the HSE being called out on a number of occasions.
Louise Dunne, Tallaght South Sinn Fein councillor, told The Echo: “It’s shocking that a grab truck has to come into our estate every week due to the high volume of illegal dumping that has to be removed.
“It’s too much for the general council litter team to remove.
“It’s absolutely disgusting and poses a serious health and safety risk due to the items such as bottles, nappies and other household waste that is being dumped beside a play space.”
She added: “This dumping, which is being done by a minority, is having a serious impact on people’s wellbeing, especially when so many people are trying to keep the place clean.
“People are also embarrassed to have friends and family calling to them [due to the level of rubbish].”
Cllr Dunne is asking the community to work together and report incidents, and details, of illegal dumping to South Dublin County Council.
“We need to take more action”, Cllr Dunne said.
“The community needs to come together and report illegal dumping.
“Not only is it impacting on everyone’s wellbeing but it’s setting a bad example for the younger kids.
“These kids are going to school and learning about the environment through the Green Flag programme and then going home and being thought something else.”
Cllr Dunne has encouraged people to report incidents of illegal dumping to the council, which can approach tenants and ask them to provide evidence of how they dispose of their household waste.
She added that there are breaches of tenancies associated with this type of behaviour and that a warning can be issued.
CCTV in the area can also be used when investigating alleged incidents of dumping.
