Exciting times for Adamstown

WITH continuously increasing membership and the acquisition of a Sports Capital grant worth near to €40,000, it is exciting times ahead for Adamstown Cricket Club.

Looking to further improve their facility in Corkagh Park with the erection of new training nets, which are expected to be in place by the start of May, the club is also set to boast indoor training facilities in the new Adamstown Community Centre.

It is just the boost needed by a club that caters for near to 150 members between four junior teams and five senior outfits, with a sixth due to be brought on line for the new season.

With this increased presence in the sport has come no shortage of success with the club picking up three pieces of silverware last year.

Indeed their Under 11s raised the Leinster C Division Cup while their thirds captured the Leinster Intermediate Cup and their fifths brought home the Minor Two prize.

What’s more the club’s fourths earned promotion to Division 13 while the seconds are up to Division Seven for the coming season.

“Adamstown always set out to be a community club and we’ve put a lot of energy into our youth development,” explained Adamstown CC Development Officer Olag Sivanantham.

“We couldn’t be more happy with how things have gone.

“It has been built on volunteerism. A lot of people have given up their time for this club and we also try to make it as affordable as possible.

“We welcome anybody who wants to play cricket, no matter where you’re from. We want to be a model club for cricket development in Ireland,” he added.

The sport in Ireland is also set grab the spotlight in May and June of this year with the arrival of two of the powerhouses of world cricket Pakistan and India to play Ireland.

And Adamstown are playing their part in helping maximise the benefits of these much anticipated matches with Sivanantham pointing out “We’re working with Cricket Ireland to get more people going to these games and create more of an interest in the game.”
