February Sports Star of the Month – John Travers
THE month of February was a hugely productive one for Donore Harriers runner John Travers.
The Drimnagh man outsprinted Kieran Kelly of Raheny Shamrocks to take the Men’s 1500m title in the Irish Life Health AAI Games in Abbotstown.
He followed that up with another winning performance in the National Indoor Championships at the Sport Ireland National Arena.
Indeed, in what was one of the most exciting finishes of the competition, Travers produced a late surge to clinch the 1500m title from Paul Robinson.
The Donore Harriers man crossed the line first in 3:50.44 with the St Coca’s athlete next in 3:50.55.
Travers was later officially named on the Ireland team for the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade where he made the final, but had to settle for 11th place in a time of 3:53.11.
It marked the second time he had made the European final having done so two years ago in Prague where he came home in seventh.
After a long indoor season the Donore Harriers star will soon be turning his attention to a busy outdoor season which is due to start in May.
