Festival designed to celebrate area’s rich culture and history
DINOSAURS and ornamental buffalo will be on the grounds of Lucan House, among other things, as part of a festival designed to celebrate the rich culture and history in the area.
Lucan Festival is back and in full-flow this week, providing an opportunity for groups and residents from all over the community to meet and celebrate their culture.
Hoping to generate some additional income for traders in the Lucan area, organisers have cultivated a jam-packed schedule which culminates on Sunday, September 10.
The festival kicked off on Tuesday, September 5 with a Walking Tour of Lucan Village and an illustrated talk about the linen and iron mills.
On Thursday, there is a walking tour of the village starting at 10am in St Mary’s car park, while there is an illustrated talk on Brendan Behan in the Presbyterian Church at 8pm.
On Friday night there is a fireworks display at 9pm, with a special viewing area at the weir.
On Saturday, on the grounds of the Italian Embassy, there is an opportunity to view the house built in the 1770s, Sarsfield Monument, bathing house and 1700’s stables, a vintage horse carriage and entertainment from the Lucan Gospel Choir, Lucan Concert Band among others.
Members of the Society of Old Lucan will also be present to give attendees the low-down on the history of the grounds, along with the birds of prey display.
Among the demonstrations, there is set to be cricket, Vikings, dinosaurs, reptiles and “wonderful” buffalo sculptures.
The village will close to through traffic from 10am to 7pm to accommodate the big family fun day on Sunday, which will take place from 12.30pm to 5.30pm.
Lucan Garda Station will host an open day from 2pm, which will consist of cell visits, fingerprinting, garda horses, the garda band and historical display of garda memorabilia.
There will be stalls from local groups and businesses, a kiddies road train, pet farm, puppet show, model railway, magical shows and the world-renowned duck race.
Outside Carroll’s Pub, there will be a main stage featuring local and international acts along with street entertainers, face painting, balloon making, bouncy castles and a monster slide.
