Fire brigade cycle raises almost €28k for charity

THE organisers of the annual Dublin Fire Brigade cycle from Tallaght Fire Station to Carlow were delighted to raise over €27,500 for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.
This year’s 83km cycle in early September, was held in memory of Walkinstown man Davy O’Beirne, who died in a road accident in Texas in July last year, aged 23.

Davy, a talented hurler who played for St Jude’s GAA Club in Templeogue, and was a past pupil of St MacDara’s Community College, is fondly remembered by his peers and family, especially his parents Helen and Jimmy, and siblings, Alan and Rachel.
Davy’s father, Jimmy, who worked for Dublin Fire Brigade for 36 years before retiring 18 months ago, was with Joe Mulligan from Dublin Fire Brigade to present a cheque of €27,581.50 to Colin Bell of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust. Members of Tallaght’s Fire Station and Davy’s family were also present.
“I’m delighted with the money raised and a big thank you to Dublin Fire Brigade staff and management who helped with the cycle and Davy’s friends who also cycled on the day,” Jimmy O’Beirne told The Echo.
“Dublin Fire Brigade, as they do every year have a cycle for charity and this year we picked the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.
“Because of what happened in our situation after my son Davy was killed 18 months ago in Austin, Texas, I’m delighted with the funds collected which will go to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.
“I’m delighted with the support from Dublin Fire Brigade and support from the community. Lots of people, particularly St Jude’s GAA Club, where Davy was involved, his friends from the club came on board for the cycle and made donations which was great.”
Colin Bell from the Kevin Bell Foundation said at the presentation: “It’s an amazing amount of money, a lot of effort went into this event. This money is to help a lot of families in the future, unfortunately this week there will be another three or four families who will need help to get a loved one home. This money will be there to help families in the future,” he said.
