Firefighters ‘couldn’t be happier’ with support received during eight-hour fundraising drive

A MASSIVE €6,660 was raised in aid of children’s cancer charity Aoibheann’s Pink Tie during a fundraising drive in The Square shopping centre on Saturday.
As reported on in last week’s Echo, a Tallaght three-year-old called Micheal Tracey was the inspiration behind the event run by local firefighters.
Based in Nutgrove Fire Station, firefighter Derek O’ Riordan said: “We’re interested in fundraising, especially for children’s charities, but this collection was a little closer to home and a little more personal for the station and our colleagues in neighbouring stations.
“Our colleague Brian Tracey here at Nutgrove has a young son who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and they have received unbelievable support from Aoibheann’s Pink Tie, so we decided to do a collection in aid of them.
“The charity does amazing work, in conjunction with Crumlin Hospital’s St John’s Ward, for families like Brian’s and we couldn’t be happier with the amount of money raised on Saturday.”
A staggering €6,300 was raised during the eight-hour collection in The Square on Saturday, with organisers thanking members of the public for their support and generosity.
Thanks were also extended to Brian Connolly from Westaid Medical Supplies who donated a €360 cheque to the collection, bumping the total up to €6,660.
Firefighters and volunteers also wished to thank The Square management, the Streat Café for providing special discounted lunches to members of the fundraising crew, McDonald’s for providing free teas and coffees, Heatons for blowing up all of the Aoibheann’s Pink Tie balloons for free and to Alan and all at Superhero Hire for organising Batman, Captain America and Spiderman to make free appearances during the day.
