Firms need to avoid public internet to handle data

BANDWIDTH capacity between businesses will exceed to such an extent, that it would be the equivalent of every person on earth downloading a complete season of Game of Thrones simultaneously.
The findings are from the third annual Global Interconnection Index, published by Equinix, one of Ireland’s largest data centre operators.

The Index measures the rise in private connectivity (interconnection) between businesses, something which is growing massively in the digital age.
As businesses need to avoid the public internet to handle their data, the study anticipates that by 2022, the global volume of interconnection traffic will be 53 zettabytes – more than 13 times the expected volume of the public internet in 2022.
Equinix, which has four data centres in Dublin, including one each at Kilcarbery Park, Clondalkin and Citywest, predicts private connectivity at the edge will grow by 51 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR), and exceed a total bandwidth capacity of more than 13,300 Tbps.
This is the equivalent to 53 zettabytes of data exchanged annually – enough to support every person on earth simultaneously downloading a complete season of Game of Thrones in ultra-high definition resolution in less than a single day.
According to a separate independent survey commissioned by Equinix of more than 2,450 global senior IT professionals, almost half believe interconnection is a key facilitator of digital transformation.
Other key findings discovered 40 per cent feel it is central to their survival, 57 per cent are expanding overseas, and 63 per cent of those are using interconnection to do so.
