Footpath and lighting plans for Raheen Drive are shelved

PLANS for the construction of a footpath and associated lighting to the south of Raheen Drive in Tallaght have been shelved by South Dublin County Council, following submissions from residents voicing concerns about the potential for anti-social behaviour if the footpath plans went ahead.

A number of revisions have been made to the Raheen Drive section of the N81 Landscape Improvement Scheme following submissions that were made by locals as part of the Part 8 public consultation stage of the plans last year.

Residents on Raheen Drive have raised concerns over anti-social issues.

The revisions to South Dublin County Council’s plans include the removal of the proposed footpath and proposed associated lighting from the open space located to the south of Raheen Drive.

The council added that the detail design stage of the plans will examine proposed planting, and will “ensure views are not obstructed”.

It has also been noted that the council will “ensure sightlines are maintained to minimise the potential for anti-social behaviour”.

This follows concerns that were raised by Raheen residents last year, with fears that the planned construction of a walkway behind Raheen Drive could lead to increased instances of anti-social behaviour in the area.

The N81 Landscape Improvement Scheme will run along the N81 from the junction with the N82 (Citywest Road) to the M50 and down as far as the junction with Templeogue.

A number of proposed works outlined as part of the scheme include a new speed reducing traffic table and pedestrian crossing at the Old Bawn Road, the upgrading and realignment of the junction of the N81 with the Old Bawn Road and the upgrading and realignment of the cycle track along the N81 from Cookstown Way to Belgard Square South.

The detailed design and tender for construction stage of Phase 1 of the scheme, which extends from the M50 interchange to the junction of Whitestown Way and Cookstown Way, is currently in preparation.

The section of the scheme that concerns Raheen Drive will form part of a further phase of the scheme.
