Former Principal recognised for contribution

AN AWARD was presented at a local school last week to a former Principal in recognition of his contribution to sport in the school.

The Harry Isaacson Perpetual Shield was presented on June 7 to Dan Kennelly, who was a teacher and subsequently a Principal at Mary Queen of Angels Boys National School, Ballyfermot for over 40 years.

The award was set up by David Isaacson, who is a past pupil and lives in Australia, in honour of his father Harry.

“Harry was a great coach in Ballyfermot in the 1960s, he was very much into diet and nutrition,” said Liam Murphy, Home School Community Liaison teacher.

“David set up the award to acknowledge people who have made a significant contribution to sport in the school,” said Liam.

As the first recipient of the award, Dan, made a large contribution to sport in Mary Queen of Angels. “Dan was integral to everything that happened in sport in the school during his time here,” said Liam.

It is hoped that the award will also not only recognise coaches. “In years to come it is intended that the award will also be presented to the unsung heroes, for example the people who wash the jerseys,” added Liam.

Councillor Vincent Jackson, who is also Chairperson of the Board of Management of the school, came to the school to host the award and presented the award with David.

The award is a collaborative award from both Mary Queen of Angels 1 Boys National School and Mary Queen of Angels 2 Boys National School and who are very happy to facilitate the award.

“It was great to have Dan back in the school. Dan’s niece, Linda Dowling, is a teacher in the school and she was also here on Friday,” said Liam.
