Friendships made over the years at Operation Transformation

St Anne’s GAA Club continue to hold Operation Transformation walks every Tuesday night in the locality, reports Stephen Farrell.

“It’s really social,” says Ms. Glenda Murphy-Smullen, Health and Well-being Officer with St. Anne’s. “We have a good old chat going around,” she added.

The initiative was started about nine years ago at the Bohernabreena Club and is run in conjunction with the Operation Transformation programme.

“We have our walk on Tuesdays at 6.45pm, all levels and ages do a 5 kilometre walk at everyone’s pace. Then, we leave it to people to go out themselves on Thursdays again at 6.45pm,” Ms. Murphy-Smullen said.

The walks are for anyone, both members and non-members, Ms Murphy said.

“All are welcome,” she added. There are also benefits, other than health related, to joining the walks.

“It’s good to walk in groups when it’s dark,” Ms Murphy-Smullen said. The social aspect to the walks are long-lasting too.

“There have been great friendships made over the years,” she added.

After eight weeks when the programme concludes, the group normally get together for a social evening.

There are approximately 30 to 40 people in the group with about 70% women and 30% men.
