Fury over illegal dumping issues at village car park

CONSTANT Illegal dumping at a car park in Clondalkin is a cause for concern for residents.
The privately-owned car park is situated behind Main Street, Clondalkin, and is used for customer car parking in Clondalkin Town Centre.

Local Councillor for Clondalkin, Francis Timmons, said despite continuous efforts by the dedicated Tidy Towns group in Clondalkin and residents, the dumping has still continued.
“Clondalkin Tidy Towns go out every Tuesday and Saturday.
They go around and pick rubbish up and they are trying their best. We have a situation now where some people are not looking after their property that they own, and it is not good enough.
“There have been a lot of facemasks on the ground and a lot of disposable cups. That particular car park, people go in and they dump. It must be a small minority of people because I would hate to think that I would know anyone that dumps because I would go knock on their door if I did.
“They [Tidy Towns group] put in all that work, somebody dumps a bag of rubbish in the car park and it blows back out onto Main Street. It is very frustrating and disheartening”, Cllr Timmons told The Echo.

“The bottom line is there is such a dedicated group of people that care so much about Clondalkin to leave it. I see people that are going out putting so much work into Clondalkin – painting, putting plants out, planting trees and building the World War I Memorial and the 1916 gardens, and then for people just to think well, I can dump my bag in the car park- it is so frustrating.” Cllr Timmons added.
The issue was raised at a Clondalkin Area Committee Meeting on January 20, by Councillor Peter Kavanagh, calling for a report on fines and warnings that have been issued in relation to the illegal dumping.
In response to the question raised, South Dublin County Council said: “It is acknowledged that incidences of littering and illegal dumping continue to occur at this location. The location is patrolled regularly by the Council’s Litter Warden. An extensive clean-up was carried out by the owner of the carpark in October 2020. The owner will be contacted again requesting action in relation to the latest occurrences of littering and dumping.”
