Greenhills host 25th Past Pupils Tournament

The 25th Greenhills College Past Pupils tournament last Saturday in Greenhills Park saw four teams take part with participants representing the five decades that the college has been in existence.

It was the 2006 past pupils team who claimed the Stephen Yeates Memorial Cup.

This season saw a teachers’ team enter for the first time and finish in third place, beating the 1970s (and sons) team in the third/fourth place playoff.

The 1970s team anchored by veterans Tommy Stewart and Clinton Reilly provided a solid backline and were supported by goalscorer Kyle Farrelly and sons of the seventies.

In the end, the teachers proved too strong, with fine displays by Ciaran Stone, Paul O Dwyer and Damien Lee laying the foundations for late David Waters and John Mulhall goals, in a 3-1 victory.

The final itself was very competitive up until the final quarter of the game.

For the 1980’s team there were outstanding displays from James Tallon and Robbie Nolan, with Mark Yeates playing a prominent role, scoring with an excellent strike.

The 2006 side also had outstanding performers in goalkeeper Daniel Reid and first half goalscorers Kevin Jordan and Daniel Finnegan. In the final few minutes Glen Reid, Barry Game and Stephen Boylan added to the scoreline as the 2006 team captured the prize for the second year running.
