GAA cluster facility at the Spawell is very well supported
LOCAL GAA clubs – including Faugh’s, St Anne’s, St Jude’s and Thomas Davis – lodged submissions supporting the development of a GAA cluster facility at the Spawell complex in Templeogue.
A number of local politicians have also lodged submissions on the plans, including Deputy Colm Brophy and councillors Pamela Kearns, Mark Lynch, Mick Duff and Lyn Hagin Meade.
While the local elected representatives said they supported the proposal, they suggested that the proposed entrance to the facility should be moved away from Wellington Lane to prevent traffic.
Several of the councillors and Deputy Brophy suggested that the entrance should be moved to the R137, and they expressed concerns over the number of parking spaces in the development.
However, the development is roundly supported by a number of local GAA clubs and factions of the GAA who lodged submissions on the plans.
St Anne’s said the proposal would “ease pitch congestion” in the area, Lucan Sarsfields said it would be “of huge benefit” to them, while Commercials said they “heartily endorse” the proposal.
The Dublin Ladies’ Gaelic Football Association also voiced its support for the plans, as did Leinster GAA.
Submissions were also made by the Orwell and WORK residents’ associations, who expressed concerns about potential traffic issues and the location of the entrance on Wellington Lane.
As previously reported in The Echo, the Dublin GAA County Board, which owns the 35-acre Spawell site, submitted a planning application for a GAA ‘cluster’ facility at the Spawell last month.
Their proposal includes one synthetic all-weather and three floodlit GAA pitches, and the construction of a single-storey pavilion.
The pavilion is to comprise ten changing rooms, showers and toilets, a kitchen preparation and service area, a team meeting room, a gym, a medical room, a physio room and a tuck shop.
Other aspects of the proposal include a 500-capacity spectator stand, a hurling wall, a walking/jogging trail, and 112 car-parking spaces.
A decision on the proposal, which centres on part of the Spawell Golf and Leisure Centre, is due from South Dublin County Council by January 15.
