Gardaí input needed on short-cut barriers

COMMUNITY gardaí need to be involved in any discussions that could see short cuts in Lucan estates blocked off to tackle burglaries and anti-social blackspots.

Independent councillor Liona O’Toole, a member of the local policing forum, says consideration needs to be taken to evaluate any short-cuts, or permeability, of sites in the area.

She cites 22 burglaries in Lucan from the start of June to the beginning of August and anti-social activity as a source of concern for residents.

Cllr O’Toole said: “Some permeability provides ideal opportunities for criminal behaviour. As a driver, I wouldn’t have any problem driving the extra way round, but Lucan has a very young population, and teenagers need to use these short cuts to pass through.

“Also, some permeabilities are ideal for residents to get access to the local school or crèche – so it’s about judging the practicality of it.”

She continued: “There was a number of burglaries in Hampstead and Finnstown, while where CCTV is concerned, or the lack of it in Lucan, there are about six blackspots. It requires government funding, but community gardaí need to be involved in any talks, to be able to advise and give input on any decisions.”
