Gardai warn elderly of door-to-door sellers

GARDAI have urged elderly residents not to engage with door-to-door sellers – in light of a dispute this week in the Clondalkin area which led to allegations of intimidation.
On Monday afternoon two people called to the home of an elderly couple in the Oldchurch estate, and said they were selling a couch.
The Echo understands the couch sellers allege they were invited into the home and were owed payment for the furniture – the elderly couple allege they entered the house and demanded money.
Gardai responded to the incident, stopping a van nearby and questioning the two furniture sellers at Ballyfermot Garda Station.
The two, with addresses from Limerick and Northern Ireland, were released shortly afterwards.
A file is being prepared for the DPP.
The elderly couple from Clondalkin are in their 80s and were too distressed to give a statement to gardai after the incident.
A garda source said: “We would advise people not to engage with people selling stuff at their door.
“Never agree to buy anything. Be extremely careful, particularly elderly people.
“Always be vigilant. Make sure your home has secure locks and if you see anything suspicious, report it to gardai.”
The Echo understands gardai are checking CCTV footage from a local AIB bank as part of the investigation.
