Get Hooked on Recovery gives a sense of belonging

A GROUP of 17 clients from the Tallaght Rehabilitation Project (TRP) travelled to Wexford over the weekend for a fishing trip.

It marked the first trip by the newly formed angling group in TRP, called Get Hooked on Recovery, and excitement was building from the minute the group left Jobstown for the trip.

From the moment we met in the carpark of the Jobstown House, the excitement was high and the anticipation was evident in everyone,” TRP staff member Patrick Ryan told The Echo.

“When we arrived at the venue, and everyone was set up and fishing, there was a very real relaxed atmosphere that took over the group.

“Everyone settled in and enjoyed the natural surroundings and the sounds of nature as they enjoyed the mindful activity.”

The group caught two fish during their seven hours at Oaklands Lake in New Ross, with the first fish being caught by Paul Lambe, but this did not dampen the spirits of those in attendance.

“All the participants gave feedback that they had real fun and a very enjoyable day that took them out of the everyday hustle and bustle of life, in a beautiful natural place,” added Mr Ryan.

“The general consensus is that they cannot wait for the next trip, which is already being planned.”

The most important aspect of the trip is that it allowed members of Get Hooked on Recovery to be in new surroundings and to engage in new activities on their path to addiction recovery.

“Through feedback, the participants spoke of being happy to have a sense of purpose [and] also to have a goal for the weekend,” said Mr Ryan.

“Weekends can be difficult for some people in early recovery.

“Having plans for the weekend can give people something to look forward to and also a real sense of belonging and fun, feeling part of a different type of fellowship and being able to interact with people in all stages of recovery.

“Angling offers a unique mindfulness tool that can be used in all aspects of their life.

“It also offers a unique opportunity to teach life skills, patience, concentration, coordination, teambuilding and social skills.

“These are all skills that are transferable to all aspects of the recovery process.”
