Glenanne women denied a final spot

Glenanne women’s second team were denied a place in the Division Five/Six Cup final after they went down to UCD 1-0 in St Mark’s Community School on Saturday.

This semi-final started with expected nervousness with both midfields absorbing the bulk of play. While the Tallaght side had made some successful circle entries, the UCD defence were clinical in clearing the ball and soaking up the attack.

The students took the lead early on with a short corner deflection falling to their player who slotted it into the bottom corner ending the first quarter with a 1-0 lead.

Quarter Two saw Glenanne come more into the game with Maria Kerrison and Keziah Hood linking well on the right hand side but the UCD defence were on top form and absorbed every attack both right and left leaving it 1-0 at the break.

The second quarter was expectedly cagey with UCD looking to protect their lead and neither team making clear cut chances.

In the final quarter Glenanne had their opportunities with short corners but were not able to capitalize and equal the score line.

UCD had their own chances to extend the lead, breaking into the circle on a few occasions with the defensive team of Marie Buttle and goalkeeper Susan Byrne keeping them at bay.

With five minutes remaining Glenanne pulled their keeper and played with 11 outfield players- searching for that equalizer to keep their final dreams alive but UCD proved too strong and maintained control of the ball while the clock ticked down to zero.

UCD now progress to the final in Three Rock Rovers in April.
