Indeed the event was made up of seven divisions based on ability, with three catering for 18-hole competition, and the remaining four for nine-hole.

Among the local competitors who fared strongly was Derrick O’Connell who won silver in his 18-hole class.

In nine-hole competition, there was gold for Anthony Phelan, Tara Leech, and Noel McClelland with Joseph Byrne and Darerca Delaney scooping silver and Teresa Reddy and Mark Boucher bronze.

Those who topped their respective divisions will have the best opportunity to progress to the Ireland Games for which the places will be allocated in June.

A number of other big Special Olympic events will be taking in the area over the coming month, starting with a Football League Blitz Final in Rathcoole and Golf League outing in Grange Castle, both on May 7.

The following day an Equestrian Advancement competition will take place in Cherry Orchard.

A Football Advancement Event is also due to be held in Peamount United’s grounds on May 27 with some 130 players expected to attend.
