‘Graffiti is everywhere, it’s wrong and offensive’

GRAFFITI on a wall behind Raheen and facing the N81 in Tallaght is “a disgrace”, according to a local councillor.

Some of it has faded while other pieces of graffiti appear to have been newly painted, leading to annoyance in the community.

This is according to local Fianna Fáil councillor Charlie O’Connor, who told The Echo about his frustration with graffiti being daubed on walls in the area.

“It’s a disgrace, and it greatly upsets people and that has always been the case,” he explained.

“I don’t know why people do it, but it’s persistent and I always report it to the council.”

Cllr O’Connor added that he believes that the people who are creating the graffiti may have deliberately chosen the wall at Raheen because it faces a busy road.

“It may well be that the people who are putting up the graffiti are taking that into consideration and for some strange reason they want to be seen,” he said.

“Unfortunately, graffiti is everywhere, but we have to be clear – it’s just wrong, it’s offensive, and it does upset people in the community.”

A spokesperson for South Dublin County Council told The Echo that members of the public can report incidents of graffiti by emailing info@sdublincoco.ie with pictures and the location of the graffiti.

“All reports of graffiti are dealt with by our removal crews as they are reported,” stated the spokesperson.

“We also work in conjunction with the probation service to remove graffiti.

“We continue to take immediate action to remove or cover offensive or politically motivated graffiti as a priority once a report is received.”
